Biography

Richard was called to the Bar of Northern Ireland in 2023 after a successful career in a senior leadership role within the public sector. His practice spans a broad area, with a particular focus on employment law and tribunals, judicial reviews, coroners’ inquests, and personal injury cases. In January 2025, Richard was appointed as a committee member to the Employment Lawyers Group (NI). Richard is also a member of the Personal Injury Bar Association and the Commercial Bar Association.

Richard is a member of the Government Legal Service (NI) Panel of Counsel for both the Crown Solicitor’s Office and Departmental Solicitor’s Office.

Experience

Richard brings a wealth of experience from his previous public sector career to his practice at the Bar of Northern Ireland. This includes significant experience in the areas of judicial review, legacy inquests and litigation, and serious criminal cases. Richard has experience of working alongside and following up on the recommendations of public enquiries. He also has considerable experience in relation to employment issues and professional misconduct proceedings.

Richard regularly appears before the Industrial Tribunal & Fair Employment Tribunal, representing both claimants and employers. He also represents clients in the County Courts and High Court, as well as appearing before various other judicial and quasi-judicial Tribunals.

In 2024, Richard helped author a “Know Your Rights” guide to protest jointly produced by The Committee on the Administration of Justice (CAJ), The Environmental Justice Network Ireland (EJNI), Friends of the Earth (NI) and Public Interest Litigation Support (PILS) Northern Ireland.

In addition, Richard has international experience, having worked with both the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in the prevention and detection of Trafficking in Persons (TIP).
