Appointment of a Lay Chairperson to The Bar Complaints Committee

News and publications

The Benchers of the Inn of Court are responsible for admitting barristers in to the profession in Northern Ireland and, in accordance with both constitutional and statutory powers, for a range of governance functions relating to members of the barrister profession.

In accordance with the Legal Complaints and Regulation Act (Northern Ireland) 2016, the Benchers are seeking to appoint a lay Chairperson to the Bar Complaints Committee.

This new Committee will perform an important public function and will be responsible for ensuring that any complaints referred to them, following earlier attempts at resolution, about the professional services provided by a member of the Bar of Northern Ireland are dealt with in the manner described within the Act.

The Benchers are therefore seeking applications from suitably qualified individuals who will assist in establishing and overseeing the important work of the Bar Complaints Committee.

In accordance with the Act, applicants must not be (or never have been) a solicitor or barrister. Existing experience in the field of professional services regulation would however be a distinct advantage.

Appointments will be made for a five year term and attractive remuneration rates will apply, covering both meeting attendance and preparation time.

Applications are welcome from anyone who can demonstrate the relevant skills, knowledge and experience to perform the role to the required standard.

Applications must be submitted using the electronic Application Form which, along with further information on this opportunity, can be obtained by contacting:

E-mail: bco@barofni.org

The closing date for receipt of applications is 5pm on Monday 10th March 2025
