As part of its ongoing responsibilities to regulate the barrister profession in Northern Ireland, the Bar Council of Northern Ireland has introduced a new version of its Code of Conduct with effect from 05 September 2022.
The new Code contains some significant changes from previous versions including :
- A Statement of Principles which is wholly new and articulates the fundamental values and standards that should be at the core of a barrister’s conduct. These Principles permeate all other aspects of the Code.
- Use of gender-neutral language and several sections updated to express matters with improved clarity and simplicity.
- Updated appendices which reflect updated guidance, policies and procedures that will assist barristers to comply with their obligations under the Code. These updates include changes to the Equality Code for the Bar, Etiquette in the Queen’s Bench and Guidelines on Pupillage. Members should also note the addition of two new Appendices addressing a new Bullying and Harassment Policy and reissuing the Bar’s Whistle blowing Policy.
Every barrister called to the Bar is subject to the Code of Conduct whether or not they are practising and every barrister has a personal responsibility for understanding and adhering to the new Code.
