Equality Before the Law

The Bar of Northern Ireland has been greatly concerned at the recent events witnessed in other jurisdictions which have highlighted the fundamental need for everyone to be able to enjoy equality of rights and freedom from any form of discrimination, particularly from those entrusted to administer justice and observe the law. The Bar of NI has a long and proud tradition, even during dark and difficult times, of maintaining its independent status and advocating for increased access to justice for all.
These core beliefs ensure that all barristers in this jurisdiction are empowered and indeed required to act for everyone in our society, without fear or favour, and to support their equal participation in the legal and justice system. All of our barristers are under a professional obligation to ensure that they must not discriminate against any person nor treat anyone less favourably on the grounds of any personal characteristic or belief.
Our Equality and Diversity Committee has spearheaded various initiatives aimed at promoting greater diversity at the Bar in recent years yet we are committed to doing more to ensure that we are an inclusive centre of legal excellence in the years ahead. Our profession must draw from all backgrounds and properly reflect the diversity of our community in Northern Ireland and this requires renewed leadership and vision from all involved in the delivery of legal services in this jurisdiction. The Bar is committed to ensuring a welcoming, vibrant and collegiate environment that is open to all.
