International Women’s Day 2020

To mark International Women’s Day 2020, the Bar is delighted to be hosting the art installation on loan from QUB School of Law ‘Women in Law: It’s Hard to be What you Can’t See’ by artist Susie Rea throughout the month of March at the Inn of Court in the Royal Courts of Justice in Belfast.
This exhibition celebrates the achievements of women working in the law across Northern Ireland, a theme which the Bar of Northern Ireland will be continuing to mark in several ways in the period leading up to its Centenary in 2021. It also features current and former members of the Bar, including Monye-Anyadike Danes QC, Noelle McGrenera QC, Madam Justice McBride and Mrs Justice Keegan, amongst others.
The concept for the project aimed to make women visible in a way that is relateable to those who follow in their footsteps and saw artist Susie Rea ask a number of high achieving women working in the legal world to write letters to their younger selves, to give advice and encouragement based on their career experiences over the years. The artwork and accompanying booklet of letters are on display in the Inn of Court until the end of March.
Bar Chair Sarah Ramsey QC remarked “I am delighted that the Bar is hosting ‘Women in Law: It’s Hard to Be What you Can’t See’ throughout March. I hope that members of the Bar, solicitors, trainees, students, women and men will take the time to visit the Inn of Court and take inspiration from the experiences of these incredible women. This is the first time that images of women have been displayed in the Inn of Court and I very much look forward to ensuring that the Bar commissions artwork in the coming months that will see women at the Bar being recognised on these walls on a permanent basis”.
