JPB Maxwell Portrait Unveiled

A new portrait of John P.B. Maxwell, commissioned by the Bar Council and painted by Carol Graham, has been unveiled in the Inn of Court to pay tribute to John’s exceptional contribution to life at the Bar.

John was called to the Bar in 1971, serving as Secretary to the Bar Council and as the Bar’s representative on the Magistrates’ Court Rules Committee for a number of years alongside developing a practice focused on criminal work. He went on to establish the JPB Maxwell Scholarship awards in 2008 which recognise young barristers who distinguish themselves in the course of their postgraduate training at the Institute of Professional Legal and to date forty-eight scholarships have been awarded. An array of esteemed guests including representatives from the judiciary, Bar Council, the Institute of Professional Legal Studies, former JPB Maxwell scholars and members attended the portrait unveiling, alongside artist Carol Graham.

This new portrait is a fitting tribute as John has been a fundamental part of the Bar now for almost 50 years and has played a vital role in helping many new members find their place within the legal profession through his scholarship scheme and its exceptionally generous financial support”.
